A Sports Policy for MIS

Vikram Singh, a parent who is also in charge of Sports at the JNU writes in about a possible sports policy for MIS that came up in a discussion of the parents who participate in the morning sports activities at the School.

Health, Physical Education and Sports play important role in realizing the outcomes of physically, mentally, socially, emotionally and spiritually fit personality. The robust education has to be created and inculcated into the physical soil of the child, nurtured through interaction with the parents, teachers, peer group and the community. The father of modern Olympic Games Baron Pierre de Coubertin had said that “Physical Education is the integral part of the total education process”.

Hence it is imperative to conduct the sports training and fitness related programs in a systematic, scientific and pedagogical way. Eminent educationists have clearly marked the role of Health & physical education, arts, creativity, peace education and other allied subjects in the National Curriculum Framework-2005. We see that the Government of India has taken a small step towards decreasing the academic load by making class tenth board exams optional to make way for the co-curricular activities.

All the teacher training curriculums are going under modifications for the sake of joyful learning and development of the life-skills. Even the corporate sector is incorporating the yoga and fitness classes so as to improve the employee productivity and check increasing health related expenses of their employees.

Mothers International School is a place where we find one of the most organized and receptive human beings, whose habits and attitude can be changed, modified and improved and are at the appropriate age to do so because once the habits are formed they generally stay with the person for ever.

Thus MIS parents have thought of framing the sports policy that can be a guideline for the future programs so that the MIS students can become an asset to the society rather than a liability and they are able to become future leaders championing the cause of the great visionary Sri Aurobindo and the Mother. It is strongly felt that there can be no better service than to produce the men and women of action and wisdom with the best quality of head and heart so that our children are better future citizens.

Accordingly, a sports policy for MIS is proposed as under:

  1. To make the sports activities more systematic and satisfying for the students.
  2. To improve upon the parents and all teachers participation in the sports and physical education programs
  3. To carry out regular fitness camps for the MIS community.
  4. To organize more and more extramural and intramural sports activities to build up confidence and leadership qualities amongst the students through exposure.
  5. To contribute to the “INTEGRTED LEARNING” concept through wholesome experiences.
  6. Create new and upgrade the existing sports infrastructure on campus.
  7. To nurture talent for higher pursuits of excellence in sports and physical education.
  8. To organize sports activities/competitions exclusively for the girls.
  9. To organize sports activities/competitions for the otherwise able students.
  10. To engage more and more talented coaches and parent volunteers for organizing sports in the morning (before school), during school hours and in the evening.
  11. To encourage students to take up allied issues like NCC, NSS, SCOUT and GUIDES etc.

Dear Vikram Singh ,

As a parent I feel that MIS is not a sport academy . When we selected the school for our child education , we find MIS as a balanced one in every respect . I do not understand why there is so much dissatisfaction in parents today ?
If there is any problem in school regarding sports and education , then management will take care of all these issues .
At the same time we must undersatnd that running the school or deciding the curriculum is not the role of parents .
We can support the school by good parenting of our own kids as every child play an important role in school .

Great effort Vikram.
It is a blessing to have parents like you who are looking beyond their own children and thinking about the good of all our kids.
I am sure that such efforts are going to inspire everybody to look beyond the small boxes that most of us are now caught up in.

Thanks

Thanks for taking the initiative. My 2nd standard child mentioned a fitness camp coming up, but couldnt say much about it..
I also heard about a parents yoga session on mornings. I would like to find out more about both of these.
If anyone has any info, please share with all of us.
Thanks.

Dear Bharat Singh,

Thank you for starting this debate.

I would really apppreciate your advice on few of the questions that are based on your comments.
1.does having a policy on sports make a school a sports school?
2.what do you think the parents are dissatisfied about?
Are you sure that parents are the only ones who are dissatisfied and the management, teachers and the students are all happy about the state of affairs?
3.Do you think that the managenent is capable of all the required changes without the active support of the Teachers ,Parents and some of the senior students?
4.I agree that the school has to be run by the principal and her team but does she need the support of the parents and the management or this has nothing to do with them?
5.What is good parenting? i am lost and I can easily see that i am not very good?

Please visit the school and meet Mr. Debi Prasad-9868063606-MIS yoga teacher who is already taking yoga classes in the basement opp. health center along with DR. BIJLANI (MBBS doctor) who is a beacon light for Debi. sessions are from 7 am to 8 am on tue, thu and sat. we have Preeti madam and Hira sir of MIS who are also dedicated teachers and are conducting fun games etc. for the kids. The activities are physically and mentally stimulating. we wish to make sports very systematic and scientific by introducing fitness assessments using percentiles and ranking the kids (no comparisons of course), that would help us classify the kids for different sports as per their own unique capabilities A probable collaboration with IIT teachers in fitness assessment (pl visit IndiaKhelo.com) is being thought about. Parents who wish to do something seriously for academics as well are welcome.

I do not know in which class Mr. Bharat Singh's child is but I have seen how the attitudes of the teachers change from Junior school to senior school. It is very important to be alert and raise our concerns when there is a problem. There is nothing wrong with it. The school also sits up and takes notice only when parents complain. Maybe, Mr. Singh's child is in a class where he has not yet encountered any problem. But please do talk to your children and find out what happens in school everyday. You may be surprised to hear about cases of bullying, punishments and sometimes even slapping by teachers!
So, as parents we have a big role to play. Good parenting from our end is critical in making the child assertive and speak up for the principles that we drill into them. We also need to support the school with ideas and help (donate generously for a noble cause and help out in the day to day troubleshooting)them when there is a manpower crunch.
I welcome Mr. Vikram Singh's initiative and would extend my whole-hearted support to him.

Dear friends,

My intentions is not to discourage you or hurt your feelings . But it is true that I did not encounter any such problem like slapping of child etc. If some teachers are involving in these acts , it should be brought out clearly with name of teacher .

Definitely we all must help the school authorities to grow further . We are talking about change of attitude of teachers from Junior to Senior side . If it is there , it is a cause of concern . But we should find out the reasons also . Very often I heard about some fellow parents defending their childs acts , whatever it may be .

Good parenting means we should not teach our children only to raise our voice for our rights but also to have a concern about their duties and a sense of respect for rules.

We , as parents generally have complaints about teachers and we did also BUT we feel shy to praise any teacher for good work .
Our praise can encourage a teacher which will motivates other teachers too .

Just ask a simple question to you , How many times you entered in PRINCIPAL'S OFFICE to praise any teacher ?

This should not be a debate and ended in endless debating . As a parent I feel it should be on continous basis with honest efforts .
